Terms

The ground rules.

Last updated 2026-05-02. Plain-English terms of use for the Tailboard policy library.

The short version

Tailboard is a free, open library of policy templates and a guided draft builder. Everything on this site is a starting point, not a signed policy. You are responsible for legal review, medical-director review, and formal adoption by your authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

What this is

The materials at tailboard.org are public-interest reference materials authored by Tailboard contributors and, in many cases, reviewed by named subject-matter experts. They draw on NFPA, OSHA, NIOSH, NHTSA, HIPAA, IACP, CALEA, DOJ COPS publications, constitutional case law, and state-specific guidance.

We do our best to keep templates accurate. We do not promise accuracy. Standards and laws change; review dates are listed on each template.

What this is not

  • Not legal advice. Tailboard does not provide legal advice. Adopt nothing as policy without competent legal review by an attorney qualified in your jurisdiction.
  • Not medical direction. No template here replaces your EMS medical director. Drug dosages, scope of practice, and patient-care protocols must be signed by a physician qualified to provide medical direction in your state.
  • Not a substitute for accreditation review. CALEA, ANAB, ACE, and similar accreditation programs require their own processes. Tailboard templates may align with their standards but do not constitute accreditation.
  • Not collective-bargaining advice. Discipline, grievance, and personnel templates may interact with your collective-bargaining agreement and state public-employee labor law. Counsel your CBA before adoption.

License

Tailboard templates are released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. You may copy, adapt, modify, and adopt them — including commercially — provided you credit Tailboard somewhere reasonable (the policy footer is fine). You are not required to credit us within the adopted document itself.

AI-generated content

The Policy Builder uses large language models (currently Claude, from Anthropic). LLM output can be confidently wrong. Treat builder output as a structured first draft — never an adopted policy. We mark content the AI should not generate (drug dosages, specific case-law tests, state-statute citations) with explicit placeholders for human verification.

No warranty

All content is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. Use of these materials is at your sole risk.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Tailboard, its contributors, sponsors, and host providers are not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of, or inability to use, the site or its materials.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the site or builder to harass, defame, or harm any individual or agency;
  • Submit Protected Health Information, identifying personal information of third parties, or law-enforcement-sensitive information;
  • Reverse-engineer, scrape, or rehost large portions of the site without attribution;
  • Misrepresent that Tailboard endorses any specific policy you adopt.

Privacy

See the Privacy Policy for details on what we collect and how we handle it.

Changes

We may update these terms over time. Material changes will be noted in the site's news section and dated at the top of this page. Continued use after a change constitutes acceptance.
