Great for

First drafts and stubborn gaps.

  • Drafting a policy your department has never written before.
  • Modernizing a policy that hasn't been reviewed in years.
  • Tailoring a generic template to your real staffing and resources.
  • Finding gaps between what you do and what NFPA or OSHA require.
  • Cross-checking against NIOSH firefighter-fatality findings.

Where you still need humans

Final review is not optional.

  • Medical dosages and patient-care protocols — those stay with your medical director.
  • Final approval by your chief and, for anything with legal weight, qualified counsel.
  • State fire code specifics — we flag what to check, but you confirm.
  • CBA terms, local ordinances, and insurance requirements.
  • Live-fire training, drills, and documented competency verification.

Common questions

Things chiefs ask before they hand a draft to their officers.

Is the policy builder really free?

Yes. Tailboard is free for all fire departments, forever. No credit card, no demo call, no per-seat pricing. The hosting and AI usage are funded by grants and Anthropic / Google startup credits.

What standards does the AI use to draft policies?

Every draft is anchored to NFPA (1500, 1700, 1710, 1720, 1407, 1561, 1582, 1584, 1851, 1911, 1981, etc.), OSHA (1910.134, 1910.146, 1910.120, 1910.156), and NIOSH firefighter-fatality investigation findings. Citations are inline so reviewers can verify each claim.

Can I edit the generated policy?

Yes. You can edit any section in the browser, print to paper or PDF, and adopt the version that fits your department. The draft is a starting point, not a signed document.

Will the AI invent drug dosages or scope-of-practice rules?

No. Drug dosages and scope-of-practice content are flagged as [MEDICAL DIRECTOR PROTOCOL] and intentionally left for your medical director to fill in. State-specific code references are flagged for human verification.

Who is responsible for the final policy?

You are. Tailboard provides drafts, references, and tailoring — adoption, training, and legal accountability remain with your chief, your authority having jurisdiction, and counsel where appropriate.

How do I tailor a policy to my specific staffing and apparatus?

The questionnaire collects staffing model (career / volunteer / combination), apparatus inventory, jurisdiction type, water-supply approach, EMS scope, and mutual-aid arrangements. Those answers shape the draft so it reflects your real operating reality, not a generic template.
